It was July 4th, 2006. I walked into a local music store with some equipment I no longer needed. I knew they bought used stuff, but I figured I wouldn’t get a lot of money for it. I could have put it on eBay, but I didn’t want to wait around for a week. I just wanted to get rid of it that day.
They gave me some cash, and a new acoustic guitar. It wasn’t an expensive guitar, but it was brand new. In fact, it was my first new acoustic guitar in 25 years, so I was pretty jazzed.
When I got home, the first thing I did was pull my new guitar out of the case, sit down on the couch, and start playing. I don’t know how, but I just started playing a new song. By the end of the day I had written a bunch of new tunes.
I started recording the basic tracks for what would become a new instrumental jazz album. I ended up using 11 new tunes, and 2 previously unrecorded pieces from some years back. 13 tracks in all. I thought 13 might be bad luck, and being mildly superstitious, I decided to call the album “Lucky Numbers.” That would balance things out.
Listen three times through, and it just might bring you some good luck.
